60/60 HI 5!

This is dedicated to the one I Love! Thanks Victor for driving me all around creation to find a horse to sculpt.

Our first try was to visit a model farm where we knew from past experience there would be a mixed grow of animals. The wind kicked in and my fingers were frozen before I could get clay moving. We finally found a field next to a school where a group of 4 horses were grazing.

We were in "Zoom", our little Miata and sculpting in the front seat with clay and board on my lap. It was very amusing.

Vic took a nap, and soon wind died and sun warmed me enough to take the project outside.

Working title for this piece is "Last Man Standing" since as the wind died and the sun warmed us up, the horses lay down, one by one. Leaving one left grazing.

Day 4, 60 for 60

No, this is not road kill. It's how our silly Cavelier King Charles Spaniel likes to lay.

Meet Andrew. He rules the house. His most important job is calming Vic down after a hard days work.

So far the most challenging part of this event has been the photography. Luckily I have had some nice, slightly overcast conditions so you can see some detail.

I am amazed how he can flatten himself out like this.

60 for 60 day 3!

I thought you would be subjected to another sleeping Newfoundland, but the deer finally came up over the hill.

The deer where a bit wary this morning. I was up on the deck and this young one kept looking up at me.

I think a key to expression is in the ears. A little twist or flick and you can almost "hear" what they are thinking.

60/60, Day Two

Since I missed the deer yesterday, I woke early, grabbed my robe, took the dogs out front so they wouldn't bark and ran out to the deck. The neighbor was still throwing some treats out so the deer were relatively calm with me standing on the deck. It was a bit cool, low 40's, but manageable if I wanted to get the job done. I would have loved to make an appointment with them an hour or two later since it was supposed to be a warm day. They stayed around for about 40 minutes or so, enough for me to get a piece and hunger for more.

60/60 Ready, Set, Go!

Here is my first sculpture! I had planned to do the deer that visit the neighbor's yard, but they decided not to show today. My trusty 10 year old Newfy is always willing to strike a pose.
The sculpture is about 6" long.

60/60, Getting ready

An artist friend of mine, Adele Earnshaw www.AdeleEarnshaw.com posed a challenge to a group of painters to do 60 pleine air paintings in 60 days. Well, feeling that sculptors are often left out of the fun, I jumped in and and said "me too!!" So, starting on March 6th, for 60 days, 26 painters and one crazy sculptor (me) are going to create. I am looking forward to see what will evolve. I am hoping to be taken to a new level in my work, but mostly it will be a great deal of fun and a wonderful exercise in discipline. Yes, these will be available for purchase. I will post one a day, and will be posting on my website www.karryl.com as well.

SEWE quick sculpt/paint

One of the highlights of the show (Southeastern Wildlife Exhibition) in Charleston was the quick paint/sculpt event. One hour was our allotted time. People surrounded me, encouraging me on as I madly threw clay about and magically came through with a grouping of very fun elephants. The auction was wild.  It was great fun. My little group will be cast in bronze and shipped to its new home. This will be a small edition so I am welcoming pre-cast orders until May 1st.
